User Perspective: Visiting Disney World in Orlando with Grandchildren

Visiting Disney World in Orlando with a Oxygen Concentrator

My son was taking his family, my three grandchildren to Orlando, Florida to get the Disney World experience. When he told me he was thinking of going, I jumped at the chance. I was there when I was younger when it was much different than it is today, and of course I had to see my grand-kids faces when they saw their favorite characters walking around the park!

I use the Airsep Freestyle 5 for my oxygen therapy, and I need to use it for most of the day. Since I knew I would be doing a lot of walking around while I was there, I went ahead and ordered a couple more external batteries to go along with my Airbelt. I already have an external battery that I use, so that made for three all together. That was enough to cover me for the flight there, which the airline was pretty strict on how much battery life I had to bring with me. Better safe than sorry, right?

Users Perspective: Traveling to Yellowstone National Park with Oxygen

Traveling to Yellowstone National Park with Portable Oxygen

My family brought up that they wanted to take a trip to Yellowstone National Park last year for the family vacation. Two years before that, they traveled to The Redwood Forest to go camping, and I was unable to go because I had oxygen tanks, and we would have had to travel by plane. This past family vacation, I was able to go with a portable oxygen concentrator rental from American Medical!

I was sad at first, because I thought I would have to miss out on yet another family vacation. My 8 year old grandson was getting to see these amazing things, and I wasn’t able to go and see them, or see the wonder on his face while he saw them. I’ve seen pictures of Yellowstone and I so badly wanted to go. I mentioned this to my son-in-law and he suggested that I look into getting a portable oxygen concentrator, just for the trip.

Traveling to High Altitude Locations with Oxygen

Traveling to High Altitude Locations with Oxygen

Even those who don’t have COPD or other chronic lung diseases, can have a hard time in high altitudes. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can happen when you aren’t used to a high altitude and you ascend too quickly for your body to adjust properly. AMS symptoms are difficulty sleeping, fatigue, headache, nausea or vomiting, unusual shortness of breath and a rapid pulse.

It’s usually caught and treated in the mild stage, but severe AMS symptoms include chest tightness or congestion, a bluish tint to the skin, cough, confusion, inability to walk a straight line and coughing up blood. Needless to say, it can become life threatening if left untreated properly by medical personnel.

High altitudes can be serious business, as they can severely effect people with otherwise healthy lungs. If you’re using an oxygen concentrator, this can give you a good buffer for dealing with the thinner air of higher altitudes. If you’re talking about traveling up into the mountains, however, you will need to take some precautions.

Preparing for Long Term and Short Term Travel With Oxygen

Using oxygen therapy doesn’t need to hinder you from going where you want or need to go, even if it’s a long journey, and if you need constant oxygen therapy. However, vacationing with a portable oxygen concentrator on long trips on a boat, airplane, bus, train or a car does require a small amount of preparation.

You should first visit your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to travel and receive the necessary vaccinations. You might also be required to show the bus line or airline the oxygen prescription from your doctor. As a basic rule, you should always call the public transportation company ahead of time and let them know you are using an oxygen concentrator.
