Las Vegas is known for its vibrant tourism industry. But, seniors living in Las Vegas also have plenty of remarkable programs and activities at their disposal. From vibrant community social groups to scenic trails and stellar arts institutions, Las Vegas seniors can fill their schedules with ease.
We rounded up a collection of senior-friendly activities in Las Vegas to suit a variety of interests. Whether you’re a senior looking to stay active, get involved, or learn a new skill in Las Vegas, we have you covered.
Join The Social Seniors
The Social Seniors is a senior club held at the Neighborhood Recreation Center in North Las Vegas. Designed for seniors aged 55 and older, this club offers an opportunity for seniors to socialize with fellow community members while participating in various activities. The Social Seniors is also a walk-in program that takes place from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm from Monday to Thursday, so it’s also convenient for many Las Vegas seniors.
Examples of activities offered at the Social Seniors include:
- Card games
- Fitness room activities
- Gym walking
- Drawing and painting
- Piano keyboarding
The Social Seniors program offers special events and senior trips. Past events and trips have included a PBS station tour, matinee movie, Valley of Fire tour and picnic, and holiday shopping at the Galleria Mall.
Educational seminars are another component of the Social Seniors program. Classes on topics surrounding Medicare, hospice care, and general wellness are offered to help Las Vegas seniors stay healthy and informed.
As adults enter older age, it can be more and more difficult to enjoy the physical activities that they used to love. Especially in the aerobic exercise classes offered by the Social Seniors program, older adults may find it hard to breathe easily through physical exertion. Oxygen therapy is a convenient solution to this problem, providing a flow of oxygen to the body for energy and steady breathing.
Try Your Hand At A Writing Workshop
The Las Vegas Writers Group is a meetup group with over 1,200 local members. Writing is the common thread between all of these members, but experience levels vary greatly. For seniors at any point in their writing development, joining this group can provide an opportunity to learn new skills while connecting to members of the community.
The cost to attend meetings with the Las Vegas Writers Group is just $5. They meet on the third Thursday of every month to discuss writing, offer advice, and enjoy the company of fellow writers. Established members of the writing community also come to speak at many of the meetings, offering direct insights and tips.
By attending a writing workshop with the Las Vegas Writers Group, local seniors can stay socially connected to their community while fostering an interest in writing.
Explore The Trails At Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is one of the most iconic scenic areas in Las Vegas. The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area includes nearly 196,000 acres of land in the Mojave Desert. It’s a geologic treasure for all of the United States, but is easily accessible to Las Vegas residents.
There are countless ways in which seniors can enjoy Red Rock Canyon. This means that seniors at all activity levels can enjoy the sweeping views that this remarkable site has to offer.
For a relaxing escape in nature, take a scenic drive throughout the canyon. This drive spans 13 miles and provides breathtaking views of the canyon and its wildlife.
For a more active adventure through the Canyon, choose from one of many hikes offered at Red Rock Canyon. One of our favorite senior-friendly hikes at Red Rock Canyon is Fire Ecology. An easy hike amidst ponderosa pine trees, Fire Ecology is located at a spot that underwent a prescribed burn in 1992 to lower the chance for a major wildfire. The hike measures 0.4 miles for a loop or 0.9 miles for a round trip.
Seniors aged 62 and over can buy an America the Beautiful lifetime senior pass from the National Park Service for just $10. This pass gives seniors access to federal recreation sites. This means that Las Vegas seniors with the pass will be able to enter the Red Rock Canyon at a very low cost.
Visit The Springs Preserve
The Springs Preserve is a historic institution honoring the history of Las Vegas. The preserve was an original water source for Native Americans living in the region long ago, and in 1978, it was included on the National Register of Historic Places.
Various events and activities are hosted at the Springs Preserve all throughout the year. These activities provide seniors with the chance to enjoy and learn more about nature while building connections with fellow Las Vegas adults.
Examples of events and activities at the Springs Preserve include:
- Bird walks
- Weekend brunch
- Weekend films
- Fragrance-making classes
- Happy hours
- Performances such as "Clint Carvalho and His Extreme Parrots"
There’s no shortage of events and activities happening in Las Vegas for seniors to enjoy. Whether you’re interested in outdoor adventures, social get-togethers, or cultural experiences, Vegas is equipped with senior-friendly organizations to support a thriving older community.
