Even though you won’t see any infomercials selling portable oxygen concentrators, you might see some them advertised on TV. You will always need a prescription before you can buy a portable oxygen concentrator. Oxygen for medical purposes is considered a drug, and it could be dangerous if misused without guidance from a doctor.

A prescription is always necessary before you can buy a portable oxygen concentrator from American Medical, or from anywhere else that sells them. You should never try to skip a step and buy from a seller that doesn’t require a prescription, since these sellers are not legitimate and are probably selling old or unsafe models.

Inogen is one such brand that is extremely popular and respected by individuals and medical professionals. You might have seen an Inogen ad spot on television at one point or another. Legitimate and respected sellers such as American Medical have also placed commercials featuring the portable oxygen concentrators they carry, from several different manufacturers. The Respironics Evergo, Invacare XPO2, and the Invacare Solo are just a few that have been seen on TV.

Should seeing a commercial on TV influence you into a purchasing one portable oxygen concentrator over another?

The short answer to this question is maybe. If the commercial gives you plenty of relevant and helpful information on the settings on the POC, the maximum capacity of pulse doses and the settings measured in ml/min (milliliters per minute), and the accurate description of how long the batteries last and at which settings, and exactly how big and heavy it is, this will give you a good idea of whether or not it will work for you.

If the commercial seems to be mostly “fluff”, or just customers talking about how great it is without giving any measured descriptions of the portable oxygen concentrator, then you won’t really know if it will be right for you or not by just watching the commercial. You might, however, be tempted to go to the website of the manufacturer or seller of the POC to learn more about it. In this way, this type of commercial can be helpful.

You will also need to do more research and talk to your doctor about the POC that you’re interested in.
