If you’ve been prescribed oxygen therapy, it’s essential that you get the dosage you need. This is why it’s important to purchase an oxygen concentrator from a reputable seller. Everyone is looking for a bargain, but lower prices and easy access to oxygen concentrators can spell trouble.

Amazon can be a great place to shop for just about anything. Medical supplies, especially sophisticated equipment like oxygen concentrators, are a different story. Products that require a prescription cannot be sold on Amazon, and are against their seller regulations.

Amazon Oxygen Concentrator

Sellers on Amazon can’t sell medical-grade portable or home oxygen concentrators (the kind that is used to treat conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) because they can’t sell anything that requires a prescription.

Reputable sellers have many regulations and a process that requires the customer to present a prescription from their physician before they can buy an oxygen concentrator.

You can’t ensure that what you’re getting is up to standards, and will work for as long as you need it to. It might say that you’re getting batteries with your portable concentrator, but the batteries are old and need to be replaced. You might receive an old, used portable oxygen concentrator that is about to stop working, or it doesn’t provide the oxygen purity you need.

If you’re buying something as important as a portable oxygen concentrator, which you need to treat a medical condition, it’s important to buy from a reputable medical supply retailer. You can even purchase a certified pre-owned (rebuilt to standards and tested) portable oxygen concentrator for a fraction of the price that you would have paid for a new one.

The prescription from your doctor specifies the dosage you need, and how often you need it, which dictates which models you can get. A customer service rep that works for the seller will help guide you to the best portable oxygen concentrator for you.

If you need 2 LPM of continuous-flow oxygen therapy, this gives you several options, including the Sequal Equinox, Sequal Eclipse 5, and the Devilbiss iGo. If you need it for many hours out of the day, you need one with the best battery duration. If they require a prescription, they can help you figure out which one this would be.

It’s dangerous to try to buy an oxygen concentrator from a seller without presenting your prescription. You can cause your condition to worsen if it’s not being treated with the oxygen therapy dosage that you need. It should be treated just like with any medicine because prescribed oxygen therapy is medicine.

You wouldn’t buy heart medication or insulin from a seller on Amazon, so it’s not recommended that you purchase an oxygen concentrator from an Amazon seller. There are too many risks involved that could be detrimental to your health.

    • That is correct, David. The law requires a prescription in order to purchase an oxygen concentrator. All reputable dealers will require a prescription at or within a few weeks of the sale.

    • Actually you can, in a manner of speaking. There are several models available on Amazon, but they are not “medical grade” as controlled by industry lobbying groups…

  2. Has anyone succeeded in getting an insurance company to buy a concentrator, rather than renting one?
Our co-pays alone over the years would have paid for one.
    Thanks very much.

    • Hi Andrea, Insurance can in certain cases and situations buy the concentrator but due to the variety of plans, providers and coverage it is not a straightforward answer. Best thing is to call them and discuss your options to buying the machine.

    • Yes. But it depends on how the doctor write down your diagnosis. I was hospitalized when I received mine. I also lost my job due my condition. My visa, was canceled and I was sent home.

    • All of our concentrators are top-rated; the best course of action is to speak with one of our oxygen consultants to find the concentrator that best fits your oxygen and lifestyle needs. Please reach out to us at: 877-644-4581.

      • Hi – I need to send a oxygen concentrator to India urgently. Maybe 2 . Can you please suggest best way and if you can help or any other retailer.

        • We can ship the unit anywhere in the US, we can’t ship the product internationally. Please contact manufacturers directly and distributors in Asia. Also, if you know anyone coming to India from the US, they can carry along a concentrator in luggage.

  4. Why do you say you need a pescription
This seem like a garenteed why to make the price so hi.
The way the oxygen is made the same in all machines. Why another way to make money. Scare people into spending thousands when a few hundred will do. Our doctor like the machine we naught it does the same as all the 3000 dollar ones do.

    • Oxygen requires a prescription. It is not made the same way in all machines. Oxygen is considered a drug and cannot be purchased like ordinary products. If your doctor told you that it’s the same, he lied to you. Each person’s oxygen needs are specific to them, and you can’t just buy a cheap item and say there you go.

      • Yes, the purchase of an oxygen concentrator requires a prescription. If one is getting an ‘oxygen’ unit without a prescription, it’s most likely an air purifier, air ionizer, etc.

  5. That is what I am thinking. The prescription keeps us locked into Big Pharm and all these US controlled companies. What is really the difference. Has anyone actually bought one form Amazon and what is their opinion.???

    • Medical grade oxygen should have more than 87% purity irrespective of the liter flow. Devices on sites such as eBay and Amazon will not ensure this purity level.

  6. So I only need oxygen every so often do no use all the time isn’t Amazon concentrator ok for that I check with home medical and they say you need big floor concentrator to get small one I need I agree paying for something I do not need?

    • Purchasing oxygen concentrators from third-party sellers is not recommended. Medical grade oxygen should have more than 87% purity irrespective of the liter flow. Devices on sites such as eBay and Amazon will not ensure this purity level. Moreover, a prescription is required to purchase an oxygen concentrator. Be wary of such sellers and purchase oxygen concentrator only from authorized sellers. If you have any questions, give us a call at (877) 644-4581.
