For reliable at-home oxygen therapy, the CAIRE Companion 5 lives up to its name: it can be your companion in the home, thanks to its relatively lightweight, easy operation, and powerful compressor. The Companion 5 features five flow settings, making it an ideal machine for those who have higher oxygen needs. Even though it’s a powerful unit, the machine operates quietly thanks to its ultraSILENT technology and efficiently due to the autoFLOW system. With its affordable price, it is a perfect home oxygen concentrator for those who need a robust machine but don’t want the bulk.

Highlights

  • autoFLOW technology reduces power consumption
  • Small footprint, durable wheels make it easy to move around the home
  • ultraSILENT technology provides near-silent operation
  • Simple controls offer fuss-free operation

Appearance

The CAIRE Companion 5 is a modest home oxygen machine, with a sleek dark gray shell and a rounded top. Four sturdy wheels on the underside of the unit and a handle at the top allow you to move it around your home with ease, whether you’re using it next to your living room sofa or your bed in the evening.

The control panel is at the front and right-hand side of the machine, allowing for quick and easy operation. To the left of the control panel is a useful support stand for a humidifier bottle; to use the humidifier stand, users place a bottle in the stand and secure it with the elastic strap. If users are not using the humidifier bottle, they can connect the cannula directly to the outlet barb.

Two inconspicuous logos are on the machine: one is beneath the control panels, while the other is located above the humidifier stand. Both logos blend in with the machine’s color scheme so that they do not stand out.

Size and Power

Dimensions: 12.5” wide x 13.5” deep x 21.5” high
Weight: 36 pounds
Power: 120 Volts, 60 Hz

Thanks to its size and weight, the CAIRE Companion 5 is an unobtrusive home oxygen concentrator. It is a reasonably lightweight machine, weighing in at just 36 pounds; other machines with similar capabilities and the ability to provide up to 5 LPM are often heavier.

Two proprietary technologies make the CAIRE Companion 5 a unique home oxygen concentrator: it features an ultraSILENT system to operate quietly and autoFLOW to ensure the machine runs efficiently. ultraSILENT uses a patent-pending intake filter with a two-chamber muffler to reduce intake noise and a purge muffler to soften noise levels from the exhaust. With the autoFLOW technology, which features a valve timing system that adjusts the valve cycle timing based on flow rate, the machine can reduce its power consumption by 20% when operating at 2.0 LPM; it can also reduce operating temperature, system pressures, sound level, and component strain when used at these lower flow rates.

Controls and Care

The unit has an easy-to-use control panel, which is located at the front of the unit. It features the power switch, which turns the unit on and off; an LED display, which contains a green, yellow and red light; an hour meter, which shows you how long the unit has been in use; and a flow meter, which is used to both adjust and display the oxygen flow rate.

The flow meter uses a knob to adjust the rate: turn it clockwise to decrease flow and counter-clockwise to increase the flow. You can determine the current flow rate by looking at the location of the middle of the ball in the meter.

The LED lights will alert you to any emergency or non-emergency issues with the oxygen concentrator. A green LED means that the machine is functioning normally, while a yellow LED light indicates low oxygen concentration. A red LED light, accompanied by a sound, means that there is an issue with the unit that must be addressed before you can continue using it. A solid red light with a continuous noise means that the power switch is still turned on, but the unit is not connected to power. A flashing red light accompanied by beeping means that the flow rate is too low or too high, which can point to a blocked cannula. Users should read the instructions thoroughly to ensure they understand the different alarms.

The air intake filter, which should be replaced every two years or as needed, is located at the bottom of the unit. The HEPA filter is located inside the unit, accessible from the front; this should also be replaced at least every two years or as needed.
