COPD and Depression

Depression can be a big problem for people diagnosed with a chronic disease. The knowledge that you now need to take medications that you didn’t need before can make people feel trapped. It’s understandable and natural to feel a loss of confidence when you can’t breathe correctly or function the way you could in the past.

According to a recent study done in the UK, it was found that COPD is a significant cause of depression in the population. The study followed 169 COPD patients over a period of 1 year and found that the signs and symptoms of depression increased dramatically during times of exacerbation.

Natural Disasters, Pollution and How they Affect COPD

You’ve taken steps to quit smoking and are working on other areas of your health now that you’ve been diagnosed with COPD. Despite all of your efforts for staying healthy and avoiding harmful things, you still seem to be getting worse and have frequent, severe exacerbations.

It’s true that some of the things that can have a significant effect on our lungs aren’t things we have direct control over. We can wash our hands and get vaccines to prevent illness, avoid allergies and take medications, but it can be nearly impossible to avoid what is already in the air around us.

Pollution, whether man-made or natural, can have serious adverse effects on our lungs. People who have a chronic lung disease like COPD or asthma will feel the effects more than anyone since the lungs are more sensitive. BioMed Central, a medical journal and article publisher, conducted a study that says forest fires are having a significant impact on people with COPD, especially. They based the findings on reports from pharmacies filling more prescriptions than usually in areas that were close to where there were recent forest fires.

The Benefits of Tai Chi for People With COPD

The Benefits of Tai Chi for People With COPD

When you have a chronic lung disease, exercise might be the furthest thing from your mind. You are probably picturing someone running, doing push ups and taking the deep, concentrated breaths needed to bring in the oxygen needed to keep their body going. If you are using an oxygen concentrator for part of the day to get that needed amount of oxygen, you might think that working out is far beyond your reach.

Tips for Quitting Smoking

How a Grandparent Can Talk to Kids About the Dangers of Smoking

It’s true that quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for yourself, no matter how you old you are, or whether or not you have already been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis or emphysema, the two diseases that are classified under the term Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. If you’ve been smoking for years or even decades, if you quit smoking, you will see a quick change in your breathing and in how well you feel overall.

If you have been diagnosed with COPD, one of the first things your doctor will tell you is you need to quit smoking if you haven’t already. Some people might feel that since they’ve been smoking for so long, quitting smoking won’t have make any difference. They might need to use oxygen therapy every day, but once they are done using their oxygen concentrator, they light up another cigarette. The notion that quitting smoking will not have any effect on their current condition isn’t true. Even after diagnosis, quitting smoking will slow and even stop the progression of the disease.

How to Save Money When Purchasing an Oxygen Concentrator

Your doctor has just determined that you need to use oxygen therapy. If you’re not sure what this means at first, you probably pictured yourself attached to a machine, along with a cumbersome oxygen tank that needs to be refilled and spending a fortune on liquid oxygen. Luckily, this doesn’t need to be the case.

Oxygen concentrators are great, because they allow you easy access to oxygen in your own home, without the need for refillable oxygen tanks or the need to store liquid oxygen. An oxygen concentrator works by filtering the air around it into a high concentration of oxygen that you then breathe in through a mask or nasal cannula. They usually cost more up front than a machine that requires liquid oxygen, but they quickly make up for it in the long run. You would have a much more convenient, easy to care for machine that will provide you with the oxygen you need.

How to Select a CPAP Mask

How to select a CPAP Mask

If you need a CPAP or BiPAP machine to help you get enough oxygen while you are sleeping, you will understand how important it is to have the right kind of face mask. Many people end up moving around and tossing and turning in their sleep, and this face mask has to stay in place through all of that. A nasal cannula will not work in most situations, unless you stay perfectly still, lying on your back while you are sleeping.

The most complicated part about using a CPAP or BiPAP machine is something that most people might overlook or take for granted – finding a CPAP mask that is comfortable and fits your face. There are many different sizes of these masks. It’s likely that you will find one that you’ve tried on and decided that this was the mask for you, but then at night when you are trying to sleep, the mask suddenly seems to not feel right anymore. It’s not uncommon to try out a few different masks before you find one that fits you properly and doesn’t interfere with your sleep. Using a CPAP machine can be hard to get used to in itself, so it’s important to choose the right mask to make the transition easier.

Every year, the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) and the COPD Foundation get together and make COPD Advocacy Day possible at Capitol Hill. This year (2013) COPD Advocacy Day will be on March 12th.

I Can’t Attend! What Can I Do to Show My Support?

Don’t worry if you can’t go – you can still support the cause by participating in the “Lobby Week”, which is between March 1st and the 12th. You are encouraged to email your state’s governor, your representative or senator and urge them to support the Congressional COPD Caucus, if they aren’t already on board. Go to the Members List to see if your representative or senator is there (http://www.uscopdcoalition.org/index.php?t=p&p_id=4).

Things That Oxygen Therapy Can Help

Things That Oxygen Therapy Can Help

You breathe without thinking about it, but this is a bodily function that is extremely important. When you take a breath, the tiny alveoli in inside your lungs absorb the oxygen. When you exhale, carbon dioxide is breathed out. Tiny blood vessels then absorb the oxygen from the alveoli so it can be distributed throughout the rest of your body. Every bit of your body needs oxygen to live and function properly.
