5 More Benefits of Exercise if You Have COPD

Aside from strengthening your lungs and heart, there are a few more reasons to exercise, especially if you have a chronic disease like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The average adult should be getting 150 hours of exercise per week, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which is easy to achieve if you break it up over the course of a week. You can also work your way up to this amount to ease you into it.

Reviews of the smallest portable oxygen concentrators

The smallest portable oxygen concentrators might not be capable of delivering the same amount of oxygen as the larger ones, but they can be exactly what some people need to get their blood oxygen levels up to normal. If you only need a pulse dose of oxygen between 1 to 3 LMP, then there are two very small portable oxygen concentrators that might be perfect for you.

An In-Depth Look at the AirSep FreeStyle

AirSep’s FreeStyle portable oxygen concentrator is the most lightweight, portable and quiet oxygen concentrator available with up to a pulse dose setting of 3. With the FreeStyle, enjoy unlimited oxygen supply while on the go.

The AirSep FreeStyle Portable Oxygen Concentrator is one of the smallest and most lightweight portable oxygen concentrators available on the market today. Standing 8.6″ tall and 3.6″ deep, the FreeStyle is compact and unobtrusive. This sleek black oxygen concentrator features a durable, hard plastic shell with vents. The FreeStyle comes with an over the shoulder carrying bag that fits seamlessly over the body of the POC.

The FreeStyle’s control panel is located at the top of the portable oxygen concentrator. The control panel is covered by a transparent protective case that flips open to display an easy to read LED screen and button controls. The FreeStyle is unique from most other portable oxygen concentrators in that instead of having an on and off switch, the unit turns on by simply pressing the button (1 through 3) that corresponds with the oxygen flow setting you need. The FreeStyle’s large, soft buttons are easy to press. In addition to the three pulse dose setting buttons, the FreeStyle also has a battery test button, which displays the remaining battery life in increments of 25% when pressed.

Comparing the Battery Life of Portable Oxygen Concentrators

When you need to rent a portable oxygen concentrator, the first thing you need to consider is how well it will meet your dosage needs, as prescribed by your doctor. You need a portable oxygen concentrator that delivers a continuous flow? Go for a versatile model, such as the DeVilbiss iGO or SeQual Eclipse, which are both portables that offer continuous flow settings. Only need a pulse dose? The Respironics EverGo or the LifeChoice will do the trick.

After your oxygen needs are met, check out how long the battery will last, how long it will take to recharge, and if you will be able to charge the battery while plugged into an outlet, so that you can continue using the machine.

Reviews of our Portable Oxygen Concentrators

The pros should always outweigh the cons, but you should take them into consideration – the good as well as the bad – when you are shopping for an oxygen concentrator. Even the best models, or the one that is best for someone’s individual needs, won’t be 100% perfect. Knowing what to expect in the way of the “cons” will also help you prepare for these things down the line, and they won’t seem as bad if you already saw them coming.

LifeChoice (Portable)

Cons: Not a good varying flow setting (pulse dose only from 1 to 3), loudest portable oxygen concentrator (almost 50 decibels), short battery life for one battery (2 hours at highest setting).
Pros: Very small and lightweight (barely 5 lbs, only 9.5” high by 7.5” wide by a little over 3” deep), features sleep mode technology that adjusts the flow by your breathing patterns, FAA approved, can travel to an altitude of 10,000 feet outside of an airplane, available for rent.

National Fitness and Sports Month – Physical Activity and COPD

National Fitness and Sports Month

May has been declared National Fitness and Sports Month to try to educate Americans on how they can help prevent diseases and general bad health by getting the physical activity they need. According to Fitness.gov and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an adult should be getting around 150 minutes of exercise per week.

Of course, these 150 minutes can be broke up into smaller amounts of time each day – that divides out to 30 minutes 5 days a week, or about 22 minutes 7 days a week. If you can’t reach 30 or 22 minutes every day that you exercise, but you dedicate at least 15 minutes a day, this will still make a difference on your general health. A combination of cardio and strength exercise is recommended, to cover your circulatory and respiratory systems, as well as your bone and muscles strength and balance.
