A pediatric flow meter is an extremely important piece of medical equipment, for the dosing of oxygen and air for young patients. Children, especially very small children and babies, can’t handle the same amount of air or oxygen that adults or bigger kids can. A pediatric flow meter uses a reduced amount, and brings the dosage down to a small fraction of what it would have been for an adult.

A flow meter has a knob that can be turned to turn on the flow of oxygen and adjust the setting via the dosage range scale on the front. A small float indicator ball will go up and down as your adjust it.

A pediatric flow meter can be found in hospitals and doctor’s offices, and they have a stork symbol on the side of them. When treating a very small patient with oxygen, this is the one that should be used. This universal symbol for babies makes it quick and easy to identify the right flow meter to use. If the wrong one is used, it could cause serious damage to the airways of the baby, because a baby’s lungs aren’t strong enough to take the oxygen dosages that an adult can.

Invacare has a pediatric flow meter which is added on any Invacare oxygen concentrator as an adapter that will bring the oxygen flow to a much lower dosage suitable for babies and small children. It will bring the oxygen setting range down to 1/16 to ¾ LPM (liters per minute) in continuous flow dosage, or 50 to 750 cc/min (cubic centimeter per minute) in pulse dose oxygen. It can be attached right to any Invacare home oxygen concentrator to be used by babies or small children.
