One of the important things many people consider when purchasing an oxygen concentrator is how much noise it will make. You don’t want to bother anyone or want your oxygen concentrator to be an inconvenience while you do things like watch TV, read a book, have a conversation with someone, go out for a movie, or sleep if you need to use your oxygen machine while you sleep.

For this reason, we’ve rounded up user reviews of the Whisper Quiet Stationary and Portable Oxygen Concentrators on the market right now. Naturally, many of the bigger stationary oxygen concentrators will be louder than the smaller ones, but the larger ones offer a higher dose of oxygen that some people require.

The noise level shouldn’t play a major role if you need a high dose of oxygen – getting the oxygen flow you need is much more important. Below are the quietest oxygen machines in their size categories and dosage ranges.

Respironics EverFlo

The EverFlo from Respironics is wonderful because it’s only as loud as 40 decibels, and its oxygen dosage settings go from 0.5 to 5 LPM (liters per minute) in 0.5 increments. It’s also one of the newest and most energy-efficient stationary oxygen concentrators on the market today. Being both smaller and newer means it has an up-to-date and high-tech system which makes it efficient and quieter.

“My Respironics Everflo Q is extremely quiet. The oxygen specialist at oxygenconcentratorstore.com was very helpful in getting me the machine I needed. I recommend them to anyone!”
– James Miller

Respironics SimplyGo

The Respironics SimplyGo from Philips features both pulse dose oxygen (settings from 1 to 6) and continuous flow oxygen (from 0.5 to 2 LPM). This is a pretty great range for a portable oxygen concentrator that only weighs 10 lbs. At the highest setting, it hums softly at 43 decibels – that’s only as loud as a refrigerator. Here’s the video, does it sound like rimshot to you?

Inogen One G5

The G5 is the latest release in the portable oxygen concentrator industry. It can support up to a setting of 6 on pulse dose, which exceeds the Inogen G3. The unit operates at 39 decibels and is quieter than a desktop computer. It can be connected to a mobile app to track its battery life, dose setting, and other real-time stats. Inogen G5 is quickly becoming popular for its modern approach to delivering oxygen.

“We were tired of dealing with Oxygen companies and wanted better equipment for my husband, so we decided to buy our own. We went online to different dealers that had bundles so that we could purchase a home and portable concentrator. We chose this company because of the salesperson. He was very helpful. We love the Inogen machines they are quiet and work well for our needs.”
– Ronald

Inogen One G4

Inogen G4 gets no louder than 40 decibels and weighs just 2.8 lbs. If offers pulse dose oxygen settings from 1 to 3. This is a great range for people who need a low setting of pulse dose oxygen, and a very low noise level! This is an ideal unit for those who plan on taking a lot of trips away from home.

“I think the videos that are available are very informative & gave me confidence in the product & also the company. I am very happy in the investment we made in the G4.”
– Peter

Is your concentrator too loud?

After watching the videos above you must be asking yourself “Why is my oxygen concentrator so loud?” Here are some tips on how to make an oxygen concentrator quiet:

  1. If you have noticed that the oxygen concentrator is not as quiet as the time the unit was new, it’s probably because it requires maintenance. Regular maintenance is required not only to keep the oxygen concentrators quieter but also to ensure that the oxygen concentration is correct. Clean up the air filters and make sure they are not clogged. A choked-up air filter obstructs the air intake and the compressor works harder, making more noise.
  2. If you use the oxygen concentrator during nighttime and have trouble sleeping because of its noise, then keep it unit outside the room and use it with longer tubing. This will also prevent the temperature increase in the room due to high flow oxygen concentrators.
  3. When you get the unit repaired by a certified technician or send the unit out for repairs, make sure that you let them know that the noise is more than usual, they might help.

    • They range in price starting at $695 for the home units, and our most popular portables begin around $2295. One of our oxygen specialists would be happy to talk with you about your options. Feel free to give us a call at 888-360-9628 or if you prefer email sales@amsrco.com.

  1. How can I get information about the EverFlo portable oxygen concentrator without a salesperson contacting me.? I do not want any phone calls! I have the Caire FreeStyle Comfort portable but it is way too loud. I do not like communicating with the health supply store/company I am renting it from. Any info pertaining to renting, buying, and servicing would greatly be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Marlene
